Do Dual Language Immersion students meet academic standards?
Immersion students attain the same level of competence not only in language skill but in standard subjects as well. Furthermore, Immersion students develop the critical thinking needed to exceed standards much earlier than their peers.
Does Dual Language Immersion work for a wide range of learners?
Immersion programs serve students of all backgrounds and levels of academic ability. Academic challenges do not preclude students from success in immersion and they achieve higher levels of proficiency in their second language.
How does Dual Language Immersion differ from standard language learning programs?
The key aspect of Dual Immersion is that students do not just learn a language but learn to think in that language. While in the second language classroom, the students receive a higher level of exposure to the language. The learning takes place in a different cultural environment, so everyday learning takes place as if the student was in another country. Thus, the student’s language becomes not just functional but second nature.
How long until my child is fluent in a second language?
Every child learns differently whether they are learning in English or Spanish. The amount of time it takes for a student to be fully fluent will depend on the student’s learning patterns, behavior and environment. Our teachers will work with every student to insure that they are learning at their unique optimum level.
Will my child speak exactly like native speakers of the second language?
Although the second language is spoken extensively in school, it is necessary for Immersion students to interact with native speakers outside of the classroom if they want to achieve native-like competence including fixing grammatical errors, increased vocabulary and idioms.
Why Dual Language Programs?
Our model operates on an additive perspective not a deficit. It recognizes that children come to us with language, and just because they may not know English yet, does not mean they start out with a deficit. On the contrary, these students need to fully develop their native language, have the opportunity to build strong literacy skills so that they can then more successfully acquire their second language. You may be asking well what about students who only speak English and are enrolled in these school models? Research shows that these students continue to show academic gains without a detriment to English.
What are the Goals for the Program?
The goals of dual language immersion is bilingualism, biliteracy and multiculturalism. In other words, by the time students graduate from the program they will be able to listen, speak, read, write and learn academic content in both languages. They will equally learn to embrace differences because this model celebrates exactly this, cultural and language.
What if I don’t know the language?
One of the main concerns for parents in a dual language immersion program is how will I be able to help my child if I don’t know the language? One way that we address this concern is that teachers send a weekly or bi-weekly newsletters regarding overarching topics students will be learning in class. This includes items that will help you engage your child in conversations and ask questions.
What language should I speak to my child in at home?
Speak to your child in the language you feel most comfortable in and read, read, read in that language. Research from the National Literacy Panel and the Center for Research, Education, Diversity and Excellence suggest that students learn their second language best when they have strong literacy skills in their native language. That means that by helping them with their English, you are indeed helping them with their Spanish! -

Los programas de Doble Inmersión benefician a todos los estudiantes de distintos orígenes y de los diferentes niveles de habilidad académica. Los retos académicos no excluyen a los estudiantes de tener éxito en este programa logrando así altos niveles de competencia en su segundo idioma.
¿En qué se diferencia la Doble Inmersión con los programas estándares de enseñanza del lenguaje?
El aspecto clave de la Doble Inmersión es que el estudiante no solamente está aprendiendo un lenguaje, sino también está aprendiendo a pensar en este lenguaje. Mientras en el salón del segundo lenguaje, el estudiante recibe un alto nivel de contacto con el lenguaje. El aprendizaje toma lugar en un distinto ambiente cultural, esto hace que el estudiante todos los días se sienta como si estuviera en otro país. De este modo, el idioma o lenguaje no solamente se le convierte al estudiante en algo funcional, sino también de segunda naturaleza.
¿En cuánto tiempo será mi hijo totalmente fluido en el segundo lenguaje?
Cada niño/a aprende de manera distinta, así estén aprendiendo Español o Inglés. El tiempo que esto tome para que el estudiante adquiera total fluidez dependerá en los patrones de aprendizaje del estudiante, su comportamiento, y el entorno. Nuestros maestros trabajarán con cada estudiante para asegurarse que ellos están aprendiendo en un nivel único y óptimo.
¿Mi hijo aprenderá el segundo lenguaje como si fuera un hablante nativo?
Aunque el segundo lenguaje será hablado de manera extensa en la escuela, es necesario que fuera del salón de clases, los estudiantes de este programa interactúen con personas que su primer lenguaje sea este. Esto con el fin de adquirir más fluidez y competencia en este lenguaje, incluyendo la corrección de errores gramaticales, incrementar el vocabulario y los modismos.
¿Por qué programas de Doble Inmersión?
Nuestro modelo opera desde una perspectiva progresiva y no desde un déficit. El programa reconoce que los niños llegan con un idioma, y no porque todavía no hablen el Inglés, esto no quiere decir que ellos empiezan en desventaja. Por lo contrario, estos estudiantes necesitan desarrollar su lenguaje nativo en su totalidad, tener la oportunidad de obtener habilidades literarias para que de esta manera puedan adquirir el segundo lenguaje de manera exitosa. Usted se puede estar preguntando ¿Qué pasa con los estudiantes que solo hablan Inglés y son parte de este programa? Las investigaciones muestran que estos estudiantes continúan avanzando en su nivel académico sin perjudicar el nivel del idioma Inglés.
¿Cuáles son las metas del programa?
Las metas de la doble inmersión son el bilingüismo, leer, escribir y la multiculturalidad. En otras palabras, en el momento que los estudiantes se gradúan de una escuela con programa de Doble Inmersión, ellos podrán escuchar y pensar, hablar, leer, escribir y aprender contenido académico en ambos idiomas. Igualmente ellos aprenderán a aceptar las diferencias, porque es precisamente lo que este programa celebra, la cultura y el lenguaje.
¿Qué pasa si yo no sé el idioma?
Una de las inquietudes de los padres cuando su hijo forma parte de este programa es ¿cómo él va poder ayudar a su hijo/a si no sabe el idioma? – estamos planeando una manera de ayudar con esto, la cual consiste en enviar semanalmente un boletín informativo que incluya información de lo que van a estar aprendiendo durante la semana en clase. Esto incluye puntos que serán de ayuda para que establezca conversación con su hijo/a y le haga preguntas.
¿Qué idioma le debo hablar a mi hijo?
Háblele a su hijo en el idioma en el que usted se sienta más cómodo; y léale mucho en este idioma. Investigaciones de National Literacy Panel y del Center for Research, Education, Diversity and Excellence - sugiere que los estudiantes aprenden mejor un segundo idioma cuando tienen un alto nivel literario en su idioma nativo.
